Van Der Rohe was developed from an existing chair called The Barcelona chair. All letters were designed based on the unique shape of the chair. In fact, the shape of the chair can be constructed with this typeface as it is shown here.
The chair was designed by the famous Bauhaus architect Ludwing Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich who worked with van der Rohe for over 10 years. The Barcelona chair was designed for the German Pavilion and for the International Exposition of 1929, which was hosted by Barcelona, Spain.
